Teaching Philosophy

Constructivism is a theory upon which I based much of my teaching.

This theory basically posits that the student will construct his/her own knowledge through experiencing an event and then reflecting upon that experience (Dennick, 2016).

For the past seven years I have been involved in some way with teaching in our nursing learning labs.

In these labs, students are afforded the opportunity to focus on the experience of learning; this is done with hands on practice of a specific skill or skills.

In a nursing lab, there may be artificial body parts which allows the student to practice a specific skill such as intravenous (IV) starts.  The student is allowed to drill and practice this skill or these skills until it is manageable without error. Additionally, faculty could engage two or three students in the management of a series of simulated problems experienced by the patient; these simulated problems could be staged on a manikin with minimal mechanical functioning e.g. anatomically correct without any electronic controls for human simulation, moderate mechanical functioning to high fidelity which would include voice and physiological functioning controlled by a computer.

In the above depiction of lab teaching and learning experiences, the student would develop knowledge at a novice level and build on that knowledge connecting it to new experiences; hence, constructivism.  It always is a pleasure watching my students learn in a safe environment where they may practice and practice till they feel they are safe to perform these skills in the health care arena. New knowledge is continually connected to new knowledge and in so doing is the active pedagogy of learning.

My students are a pleasure; teaching is a pleasure. Students should always have a safe environment in which to learn.

Senior Fellow Higher Education Academy Sfhea

The Higher Education Academy (HEA) is an international, non-profit organization that promotes teaching excellence in higher education. HEA is a subsidiary of UK-based Advance HE. There are more than 115,000 HEA fellows in the world. UVU is the first American institution to be accredited by the HEA to offer fellowship recognition to faculty, administrators, and staff supporting learning. Fellowships are earned through written reflection and interaction with an HEA Mentor to demonstrate how one’s teaching/supporting learning practices fulfill the dimensions of the UK Professional Standards Framework (PSF). The PSF is the heart of the HEA fellowship recognition program. This internationally recognized articulation of the necessary actions, values, and knowledge to effective teaching/supporting learning provides the framework for peer dialogue and personal reflection of practices.
